Lowe’s Companies, Inc. (/loʊz/), often abbreviated as Lowe’s, is an American home improvement retailer. Based in Mooresville, North Carolina, the company operates a retail network in the United States and Canada. As of February 2021, Lowe’s and its affiliates operated 2,197 hardware and hardware stores in North America.

Lowe’s is the second largest hardware chain in the United States (previously the largest in the United States until it was overtaken by The Home Depot in 1989), behind competitor The Home Depot and ahead of Menards. It is also the second largest hardware chain in the world, behind Also The Home Depot, but it is ahead of established European brands like Leroy Merlin, B&Q, and OBI.

Lowe’s Credit Card first store, North Wilkesboro Hardware, was opened in 1921 by Lucius Smith Lowe in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. After Lowe’s death in 1940, the business was inherited by his daughter Ruth Buchan, who later that year sold the business to her brother James Lowe. James took on his brother-in-law, Carl Buchan, as a partner in 1943.
